KEQMS STUDENTS CZECH OUT INTERNATIONAL SCIENCE SEMINAR Return to News Six top young scientists from Year 10 are set to attend an international science seminar in the Czech Republic. The group flies from Manchester on Saturday 18 September and will spend ten days at the Nemcove School in Hradec Kralove, the capital of Eastern Bohemia, 75 miles beyond Prague. Teachers Phil Butterworth and Sarah Hall will accompany Philip Raymond, Matthew Fear, Dexter Hayes, Sarah Dawes, Liz Hodgson and Skye Black, all of whom are just embarking on their GCSE science courses. The five day seminar at a special study centre will involve a total of 24 students from KEQMS, Hradec and from the Siebold School in Wurzburg, Germany. Their work will focus on alternative sources of energy. Students, working in international pairs, will carry out experiments and research, attend lectures and will conclude the week with their own presentation in front of a specially invited audience. “I’m both excited and a bit apprehensive,” said Philip Raymond, 14. “We will be hosted by Czech families to start with and, with a different language, different food and a different standard of living, I’m expecting a few surprises. We are all trying to go with open minds.” Jan Sterba, Head of the Nemcove School, is looking forward to hosting students from Britain and Germany. “As new members of the enlarged European Union, Czechs are very keen to develop our international links,” he said. “I am sure that the seminar will enhance the understanding of the students in every sense and I feel it is a great opportunity for all of them.” This will be the eighth international seminar involving the three schools, with 200 students and 30 teachers participating since 1997. Later this year KEQMS will host a group of art students from Hradec Kralove and in 2005, Lytham is the venue for the science seminar. |
